What Goes on in Hawthorn
Homework
Skipton Castle
Science Week - Maths
Here is a class charter that the members of Hawthorn created together. They discussed the classroom and school and how the environments should be safe and happy places, and they then talked about different ways that we could work together to make this happen. For each idea, the children then explained their answers and for some extended them. Some answers even needed extra bits noting. For example, we know that we don’t run in class, but if it is P.E. then that is okay.
Once we had discussed, explained and agreed to the new rules, the class then signed their names to say that they would try their hardest to follow them. We are a team, so we also agreed to help each other remember the rules if we ever noticed that someone had forgotten one of them.
Important Things to Note
PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Kits should be kept in school for the entire half term.
Phonics and Reading
We follow the Little Wandle scheme. We read every day and run two phonics lessons each day. The first recaps our known graphemes and words, and then we learn a new grapheme of the day. This knowledge is then tested through the introduction of new words. Our second phonics lesson secures this knowledge by revisiting our learning at a faster pace.
Literacy
In Literacy, we will focus on two texts: The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and Katie Morag – Island Stories.
We will continue to focus on what makes a sentence: a capital letter at the beginning, a subject, a verb, and appropriate punctuation. We will also be consolidating previously taught concepts. This half term, we will introduce some new concepts, including adding -s and -es when pluralising words, common exception words and spelling patterns, exclamation marks, and using "and" to join sentences.
As well as using the two key texts to enhance our writing skills, we will also use our Year 1 trip to Lytham St Anne’s to write within the recount genre.
Maths
In Maths, we follow the White Rose scheme of work. This term, we will be focusing on position and movement, place value within 100, money, and time.

Alongside the scheme, we will also teach Mastering Number. This programme helps to develop fluency and the skill of subitising. We use concrete resources, such as rekenreks, to support learning.
Computing
The focus in Computing is programming: Introduction to Animation. This unit will see the children learning about and creating their own algorithms and animations.
History
In History, we will be looking at what makes someone famous and the reasons for remembering and celebrating them. We will do this through an investigation into Grace Darling and her achievements.
Science
Our science learning will continue to focus on materials. The children will observe, describe, and compare different materials through their observations of everyday objects.
PSHE
In PSHE, the topic will be Growing and Changing. This area will cover:
- Healthy Me
- Then and Now
- Taking Care of a Baby
- Who Can Help? (2)
- Surprises and Secrets
- Keeping Privates Private
Physical Education
In PE, we will have two different focuses: striking and fielding games, and yoga. The lessons will build the skills that children need in these areas.
Please remember that we have PE on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The children may keep their kits in school for the entire half term.
