Marsden Infant & Nursery School

Physical Education

Intent

At Marsden Infant and Nursery School, the intent of teaching Physical Education is to give children the knowledge and skills required to make a positive impact on their own physical and mental wellbeing.  We inspire children to enjoy being active and to appreciate the health benefits of leading an active lifestyle which will contrinue throughout their lives.

Children are provided with a range of experiences to allow them to develop the fundamental movement skills, as well as to develop and apply their interpersonal skills, including determination, self-belief, honesty and teamwork.  We are passionate about the need to teach children how to co-operate and collaborate with others as part of a team, in order to build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.  Our Physical Education lessons encourage children to compete against themselves, and others, whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills, including promoting a positive growth mindset and the resilience to persevere.

It is important to us that the children's experience of Physical Education is positive and motivating.  We aim to inspire children from their first day with us and continue to build on this throughout their time at Marsden Infant and Nursery School, and develop a life-long passion for being physically active.

Implementation

KS1 pupils participate in bi-weekly high quality Physical Education lessons delivered by teachers with a good subject knowledge. Children in Reception hace at least 1-hour of Physucal Education each week.  Nursery children have at least 30-minutes' of planned physical exercise each week. Children across Early Years have daily access to outdoor learning opportunities.  Physical Educaiton is further supplemented by the use of 'Meerkat Movers' - an initiative that we have adopted to allow pupils to increase the amount of physical activity they participate in each day and as an opportunity to re-energise themselves physcially and mentally.

Teachers present subject matter clearly, and systematically check pupils for misconceptions; giving clear, direct feedback where appropriate.  Teachers help pupils to build upon previous knowledge and skills and help them to remember what is being taught in the long-term.  Assessment is used to check understanding and to plan next steps in teaching and learning.  It is also used as a way to identify gifted and talented athletes as well as children who may require additional support.

Through the use of the Sports Premium, children gain experience of working with experts in the PE field and teachers are given the opportunity to build on their CPD.  We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities after school.  In addition, we participate in sporting competitions and events through our well established links with the Pennine School Sports Partnership.  This inclusive approach ensures all children have the opportunity to improve their physical development, mental health and wellbeing.

Impact

Our Physical Education curriculum ensures all children improve their sporting knowledge, skills, vocabulary and confidence through the values and disciplines of Physical Education.  They are able to make appropriate choices about their physical and mental health and develop a positive self-awareness as they become physically competent.  Children also demonstrate a healthy sttitude to competition, showing respect for individuals, teams, officials and coaches.  Our progression of skills is clear and inclusive to ensure all children have the capacity to make progress and are ready for the next phase of their education.
